My name is Eric Esterhuizen. I was born on the 12th February 1979 at around 01H25 am (a Monday-morning!) at the Kempton Park-hospital, Transvaal, South Africa.

For the first 16 months of my life, we lived at 19 Swart Street, Kempton Park, where-after we moved to Plot 111, 4th Avenue (later High Road), Bredell, Kempton Park. That is where I grew-up and where my father still lives.

At 18 months. A very lively young lad!
After moving to Bredell I was in a Crèche for a few months and then went to stay by my paternal grandparents during the week, coming home for weekends.
A year before going to school, my parents were divorced and I lived with my father on the plot, visiting my mother every second weekend. I attended the Rita Laubscher Nursey School at Jan Smuts Airport.

PRIMARY SCHOOL
I started Primary school in January 1986 at Laerskool Bredell, which was but a few meters from our house. My first (Grade 1) teacher was Mrs. Hester Page and the Headmaster was Mr. Schalk Van Dyk.

I was a keen sportsman from day one, so, much of my time as a young boy was taken up by athletics, cross-country running, rugby and cricket. I played rugby for the first-team, broke the Benoni Primary School’s 1200 meter record and was selected for the VORLAB (Far East Rand Cross-Country Team) for 2 years.

HIGH SCHOOL
When we went to High School, my father decided to put us in boarding school. I started my Standard 6 (Grade 8) year at Capricorn High in Pietersburg, Transvaal in 1993.
Boarding School was a far-cry from Plot-life and at first it was quite difficult to adapt. The fact that I had my brother there did make it easier though.

Weekends were always busy between Sport-activities, visiting my father and visiting my mother. I participated in athletics, Cross-country and rugby.

My High school years were also quite traumatic as my maternal grandfather passed away when I was in Grade 8, my maternal grandmother passed away in my Grade 9 year, my paternal grandfather got very sick in my Grade 10 year and my aunt (my father’s sister) died in my Grade 12 year. I graduated from High school at the end of 1997 and passed the Higher Grade, with a distinction in Afrikaans.

1998 ON
After school life was not that easy as jobs were scarce. Affirmative action was in full-swing and to get a job as a young White man was difficult. I took on jobs as waiter and Bar-man at restaurants. I decided to go to the United Kingdom for 2 years. In June 1998 I left South Africa for the United Kingdom. After arriving in London, I travelled to Ross-On-Wye and got a job at a Summer School for children.

At first this was quite a culture-shock to me, I had to clean-toilets, etc. etc. If it was such a shock to me, I can imagine what it must be like to young people from South Africa that did not even attend Boarding School!!

On the 28th August that year, the Summer School closed and I was on my own to find a job and earn my daily bread in the foreign Country! It was not until the next Friday that I phoned home (as I then had a job and a place to stay in London), only to find out that my paternal Grandfather passed away on the Monday and was buried the Wednesday. I was devastated!
For the next 6 months I had several temporary jobs, from barman to potatoe-fields to….
In the beginning of March 1999 the Summer School started again and I had a job for 6 months.
From the end of August 1999 I again travelled all over England and Scotland, doing odd-jobs here and there. I even found the time and money to have a short holiday in South Africa.

Beginning March 2000 I was back at the Summer School.
At the beginning of September 2000 I returned to South Africa. A week later I went to Ilha Do Sal, Cape Verde, on holiday to my dad (who took the post as Aviation Advisor there at the end of June 2000). After a week on the beach, I again had some colour!! I returned to South Africa, and the job-hunting started over again.
After some months of having a few temporary jobs, I started with an Insurance Company in Johannesburg in January 2003. All went well, but towards the end of 2008 I was looking for a more challenging position and took up a post as sales-consultant with the Yellow-pages.
In the beginning of August 2007 I got quite a scare as I was diagnosed with cancer. I had an operation the next day and, although I still have blood-tests done every month, and regular X-rays and CT scans, everything seems to be 100% again.

Gert Petrus Esterhuizen was born on the 26th October 1950 in Central Avenue, Kempton Park. He is the sixth child of Christiaan David (Dawie) ESTERHUIZEN and Anna Magrietha Cornelia SWANEPOEL.
Gert grew up in the Kempton Park-area. At the age of 5, the family moved to a farm in Koster, Transvaal, South Africa. The farming-adventure did not quite work out and the family moved back to the Kempton Park-area (Bredell) in 1956.
In 1957 Gert started Primary school at Laerskool Bredell. At the end of February that year, the family moved to Zesfontein, Petit, Benoni and Gert continued his Primary schooling at Laerskool Excelsior. In 1962 the family moved to Kempton Park (125 Kerk Street) and Gert went to Kreft Laerskool. In January 1964 he started his High School career at Kempton Park Hoerskool . At the end of February 1964, the family moved back to Zesfontein and Gert continued his high school career at Hoerskool Noord Oosrand, Petit, Benoni, where he graduated with University Exemption at the end of 1968.
In January 1969 Gert started his career with the Department of Transport at Jan Smuts Airport as an assistant Air Traffic Controller. For the next 4 years Gert studied at the Air Traffic Control School and did his practical at jan smuts Airport and Rand Airport (with a 6 month transfer to Wonderboom Airport, Pretoria). By December 1972 Gert had validated as an Air Traffic Controller in Aerodrome Control (Jan Smuts, Rand Airport, Wonderboom Airport

In 1982 Gert was transferred to the ATC Training School as an Instructor.

In 1985 Gert obtained the Higher Education Diploma for the Educators of Adults from the University of the Witwatersrand.

In 1986 Gert was promoted to Senior ATC and in 1990 to Principal ATC. In 1990 he was promoted to Chief Instructor.
During the period 1990 to 1992 he acted as Chief ATC (ATC College) and in March 1992 was promoted to Chief: ATC College.

During 1994 the Air Traffic Services was privatized and Gert was appointed Chief of the ATNS (Air Traffic and Navigation Services) College.
In 1996 Gert was appointed Chief Co-ordinator and Training Support at the ATNS College, and in 1999 Head of Administration: ATNS College.
In 2000 Gert accepted a post as Aviation Advisor for Aeroporto e Seguranca Aerea at Ilha Do Sal, Republic of Cape Verde and commenced duties at the end of June 2000.

Elizabeth Maria (Elize) DETTMAR was the eldest of two children of Albert Henry (Sonny) DETTMAR and Maria (Miemie) VAN AS.
Elize was born on the 16th March 1954 in Johannesburg. (Albert had a son, Henry, from a previous marriage to Anna Jacomina HATTINGH).
Elize spent most of her childhood at the Modderfontein Dynamite Factory, where the family lived. She attended the Nobel Laerskool and later the … Hoerskool. In 1969 the family moved to Hornsrust (Dist. Benoni) and she went to Hoerskool Noord Oosrand, where she matriculated at the end of 1972.

In January 1973 Elize started working as a clerk with South African Railways in Johannesburg. She was later transferred to South African Airways at Jan Smuts Airport.

3) 3rd Generation (Grandparents)
Christian David (Dawie) ESTERHUIZEN (Gert Petrus), 12th child of Barend Daniel ESTERHUIZEN and Elsie Maria Elizabeth DE BEER, was born on 26th September 1919 in the Ventersdorp-area (farm Modderfontein), and died on the 31st August 1998 in Bredell, Kempton Park, at age 78. He was buried in the Bredell Cemetery on 2 September 1998.

512. Christoffel ESTERHUIZEN was born 1666 ca and died on 21 Aug 1724 in Bottelary, Stellenbosch aged 58.
General Notes: Christoffel is accepted as the progenitor of the Esterhuizen-family in South Africa.
It was believed that he was from French origin and that the initial surname was Extreux or Estreux.
The late Dr. J.H. Esterhuyse (Christoffel Esterhuys - Stamvader van die Esterhuys-familie
(Hersiene Uitgawe) 1999) did extensive research and found that most probably Christoffel came
from Friesland and that the original surname was probably Easterhus. The first time that the name
was signed on an official document was when Christoffel´s youngest son (Christoffel) signed his
surname as Esterhuys. It is believed that the French minister of the church (Rev Pierre Simmond)
where Christoffel baptised his first son (Jan), entered the child in the register as Jean Estreux.
Christoffel arrived in South Africa around 1684. Although he was illiterate, it was obvious that he
had thorough knowledge of farming. By 1700 he had 15000 vines, 100 sheep, 50 cattle, 3 horses
and 2 slaves on the farm Hartenberg, North of the Bottelary-mountain, Stellenbosch. He later
bought the adjoining farm, Weltevered and a house in the up-market area of Bottelary. By 1719 he
owned 15 slaves. His health was declining and in 1721 he sold Hartenberg and moved to his house
in town. Willem and Jan Andries stayed behind on the farm Weltevreden. Christoffel (Jnr) was too
young and moved with his parents to the house in town. He died intestate.
